About the Book

This book was published in Delaware, Ohio, in 1885.  Presumably it was published by T. C. O'Kane as there is no other publisher's name.  The book is about the size of a modern paperback, with board covers and cloth binding.  It contains 107 hymns on 71 pages.  Some of those hymns are still popular today, others I haven't seen in modern hymnals.

My copy is the "music version" which included piano arrangements for almost all of the songs.  In some cases this was a modern arrangement with the lyrics occupying the space between the treble and bass staves, having syllables aligned with the notes.  In other cases a very compact two-stave piano arrangement is given and the words are printed separately.  In a few cases one verse is expanded in the modern manner and the remainder are printed separately.  In some cases two or more songs share a common tune.  To describe this book as having no wasted space would be an understatement.  One gets the impression that paper was very expensive in 1885!

"FOR PRICES AND TERMS ADDRESS THE PUBLISHER" appears in bold print at the bottom of the front cover – but nowhere in this intact book is there a publisher's name or an address other than "Delaware, Ohio."  Perhaps in 1885 Delaware, Ohio was small enough that mail addressed to "T.C. O'Kane, Delaware, Ohio" would actually reach him...

The index to the book, containing links to online copies of the songs, appears at the bottom of this page.

Notation and Tablature

Where the verses are expanded and synchronized with the music notation in the modern manner, the notation and tablature here will be likewise combined with the lyrics.  In the cases of separate text and music I have only combined the notation and tablature for those songs that I know well enough to do so.  Wherever I had doubts I transcribed the text and music separately, as it appeared in the book, and those more knowledgeable than I can figure it out for themselves!

I transcribe the songs exactly as they appear in the book.  Words, credits, or music may conflict with other citations but are exactly as they appear in this book.  Copyright dates are cited for historical purposes but this book and all of its contents have passed into the public domain.

In addition to the transcriptions as they appear in this book, I may also provide notation or tablature in other keys, especially keys more convenient for tinwhistle and dulcimer players.

I hope to eventually transcribe and tab all of the songs, but I work for a living so that's a slow process.  I'll probably begin with those that are not commonly found in modern hymnals and progress from there.

The Song Index

The index in the book listed songs by the first few words of the first stanza, not by title. I have copied the index here as it appeared in the book with the following alterations.  Where the first line is also the title, I've italicized it and used the entire title even if the index in the book only used the first few words.  Where the title is different from the first line, I've included the title in italics after the first line as it appeared in the printed index.  Finally, in a few cases I've added notes in a smaller font.

Song titles in the table below are links only when I've had a chance to transcribe and/or tab the song.

A beautiful land by
Will You Go With Me?
Just as I Am
NOTE: The title for the tune is printed as Hamburg, L.M.
Alas! And did my Savior Bleed?Lo! A voice is calling
I Will go to Jesus
All along the way-side
Victory is Nigh
Lord, I care not for riches
Is my Name Written There?
All glory and praise
The Great Gift
Make me a Worker for Jesus
All hail the power
Crown Him Lord of All
My faith looks up to thee
Lamb of Calvary
All praise to the Lamb
Accepted in the Beloved
My Father is rich
The Child of a King
And can I yet delay
Coming Lord, to Thee
My latest sun is
Beulah
Are you ready for
Behold the Bridegroom
Nearer, my God, to Thee
Are you weary
Tell it to Jesus Alone
Oh! for a thousand
Exultant Praise
Behold a stone in Zion
The Foundation-Stone
Oh happy day that fixed
Happy Day
Behold a stranger
The Stranger at the Door
Oh, Land of Rest
Blest be the tie
Blessed Union
Oh now I see
Cleansing Wave
Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly
The Spirit Sought
Oh sing of Jesus
Redeemed
Come, needy sinners
Linger no Longer
Oh sometimes the shadows
The Rock that is Higher
Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing
Note, the title of the tune is printed as Nettleton.
Oh there is a beautiful
I Long to be There
Come to the fountain
Washed in the Blood
Oh to love Thee, precious
Precious Jesus
Come, trembling sinner
Come to Jesus
Oh how happy are they
Still, the Savior is Mine
Come, ye sinners
Whosoever Will, May Come
Oh think of the home
Over There
Come, ye that love
We're Marching to Zion
Once for all the Savior Died
Dear Jesus, I long
Whiter than Snow
On Jordan's stormy banks
The Land Just Across the River
Note, This song appears with a different chorus in modern hymnals as On Jordan's Stormy Banks.
Depth of MercyOn the cross, the Savior's
Only in the Cross
Down at the CrossOut from the regions
Gathering Home
Do you hear the Savior
I am Listening
Out to sea 'midst stormy
Flash the Toplights
Far from these scenes
Satisfied By and By
Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me
In the book the words aren't credited and the tune is simply titled Toplady.  The words to Rock of Ages were written by Augustus M. Toplady and the music was by Thomas Hastings.
Father, I stretch my hands
I Do Believe
Savior, who has died
Daily Life
Following JesusShall we Gather at the River
The title in this book appears as Beautiful River.
Forever here my rest
I Will Trust in the Blood of the Lamb
Should the death angel
Say, are You Ready?
For Jesus we are soldiers
Still Marching On
Simply Trusting Every Day
Give me GraceSowing in the morning
Sowing and Reaping
Guide Me, O thou greatSweet Hour of Prayer
Have you been to Jesus
Are You Washed in the Blood?
The Great Physician now
Have you Heard? The Light of Truth

Holding on to JesusThe Savior to you who his
Ye Must be Born Again
Holy Spirit, faithful guide
Guide
There are angels hov'ring
Angels are Hovering Round
How Bright the Hope
I am Glad there is Cleansing
There is a fountain
Glorious Fountain
How Firm a FoundationThere is a Gate
The Gate Ajar for Me
How sweet the name
Oh, How I Love Jesus
There were ninety and nine
The Ninety and Nine
T. C. O'Kane must have had a sense of humor.  This is song number 99 in the book.
I am coming to the cross
Trusting
Tho' troubles assail
Rejoicing Evermore
I am dwelling on
Is not this the Land of Beulah
'Tis grace! 'Tis grace
Wonderful Grace
I have a Savior
I am Praying for You
Trusting alone in Jesus
Trusting in Jesus
I'm glad salvation's free
Free Salvation
We are toiling up
Toiling up the Way
I am Saved! the LordWe'll lay our heavy
Sweet Resting By and By
I gave my life for thee
What for Me?
We praise thee, O God
Revive us Again
I hear the Savior say
All Paid
Weary with walking alone
Leaning on Jesus
I need thy presence
I Need Thee Now
We speak of the realms
By and By
Tune - Sweet By and By
I Saw a way-worn trav'ler
Deliverance will Come
What a Friend we Have in Jesus!
I will sing you a song
Home of the Soul
What means this eager
Jesus of Nazareth
In the cross of Christ
Glorying in the Cross
When Jesus shall gather
He Will Gather the Wheat in His Garner
Jesus, Lover of my Soul
I believe this is the title.  This is another of those cases where the book shows a tune title that appears to be the composer's name or some other reference, in this case "Martyn, 7s"
Where do you Journey
Jesus, my Lord, to Thee
Take Me as I Am
Who is On the Lord's Side
Jesus, thy precious blood
I've Been Redeemed
Who, who are these
Sweeping Through the Gates
Jesus died on Calvary
Only the Blood of Jesus
Work, for the night is
Work, Work, Work!
Jesus now offers forgiveness
Freely to All
