About the Book

This softbound booklet was published by The Cable Company, a piano manufacturer, in 1919.  Notice that it contains 102 songs categorized as "National and Patriotic," "College and Humorous," "Sacred," "Songs for Children," "Songs of Sentiment," and "Miscellaneous" plus one page of blank musical staves.  The publisher didn't mention which of the 102 songs was not one of the "101 best" (it kind of makes one wonder if Cable pianos had 89 keys...)  All but two or three of the songs are harmonized in typical four-voice arrangements.

Many pages had a small quote, historical note, or slogan at the bottom and I've reproduced those here.  A few of them are not politically correct by today's standards (for that matter, a few of the songs are not politically correct).  Those who value political correctness over historical accuracy should proceed no further!

The index to the book, containing links to online copies of the songs, appears at the bottom of this page.

Notation and Tablature

I transcribe the songs exactly as they appear in the book.  Words, credits, or music may conflict with other citations but are exactly as they appear in this book.  Note especially that the words to early negro and "blackface" songs have often been "anglicized" in more modern books – I print the lyrics here exactly as they appear in this old book.  Copyright dates are cited for historical purposes but this book and all of its contents have passed into the public domain.  Note that the graphics for this notation and tablature, and all MP3 or MIDI performance files, are recently copyrighted and are not in the public domain.  See the Folk Tablature Index for more copyright information.

In addition to the transcriptions as they appear in this book, I may also provide notation or tablature in other keys, especially keys more convenient for tinwhistle and dulcimer players.

There were no guitar chords in this book.  Wherever you see guitar chords I have added them.

I hope to eventually transcribe and tab all of the songs, but I work for a living so that's a slow process.  Curiously, I seem to be able to acquire old music books much more quickly than I can transcribe them...

For those who use abc music notation, the abc version of the book is here.  The graphics here were all created with my version of scoring software for abc, and that is available here.

The Song Index

The table below closely duplicates the original index page in the book.  Some of the longer titles were wrapped to two lines.  I haven't duplicated that here, and in fact I shortened a couple of titles to avoid wrapping because it messes up the table formatting.

Song titles in the table below are links only when I've had a chance to transcribe and/or tab the song.
